It's a beautiful Monday morning and was just getting ready to take the dogs on their morning walk when Hardy dog goes bonkers on the porch, barking her head off. Soon all four dogs are barking and focused on one corner off the deck. I look out the window and can see a large brown body moving amongst the trees. Lo and behold, here comes Bullwinkle. He sauntered across my leach field and onto the trail that runs along my property line. Dang, this is one big animal, I think. Second thought was - gee, that's where me and the dogs go for our daily walk. Hmmm. Note to self: don't walk the dogs down near the trail. Moose are very skittish and can be downright mean. Last year two dogs were trampled to death by a moose here in Crystal Lakes. Big question now is: where the heck can I take the dogs for a walk? Guess we'll just have to run up and down the driveway....

Must be the Altitude...
I've been getting up at 5 am every morning since daylight begins sometime around 4:30... get the dogs out for their morning rituals, feed 'em and check the cat's insulin levels then shoot her up. Porch sitting with a cup of tea is my ritual and then back to bed for a couple of hours. The rest of the morning is spent either reading or working on a quilt top, listening to NPR. After lunch the dogs and I usually take a walk which means I end up walking for over an hour as each dog gets his/her own walk time.
On today's walk moose poop seems to be fairly prevalent around the property. Moose were re-introduced into Colorado's State Forest a while ago and they have flourished around these parts. Every year I'm up here I usually see 4-6 moose hanging around the Crystal Lakes area. One of the ladies in the CL office told me that a moose trampled a couple of dogs last year - seems they are meaner than any bear. Guess the dogs will have to stay close on leash...
The evening ritual is a shower, early dinner and one of the many DVDs I brought... some star gazing if it's clear.
Sister Meredith and her boys arrive on Tuesday and then we are off to Yellowstone!

Miscellaneous thoughts from the CO porch
Been up here now for 3 days - me, the dogs and the cat are all settled in. The hummers found the feeder within 15 minutes and there are now 3 male broad tailed, 1 male rufous and 3 females of indetermine species. Additionally have seen western bluebirds, ravens/crows, snowshoe hares, deer, and several species of birds I don't recognize... My neighbor up the road had a bear show up for dinner the first day I was here - needless to say, I'm REALLY glad I have 4 big dogs with me!
The weather is awesome - highs in the 70s and lows in the upper 40s. Have done a couple of walks that were short and sweet simply because both the dogs and I aren't used to the altitude yet. The dogs really love getting out and insist on stopping at every tree to check out the smells. Since I'm huffing and puffing anyway, I let 'em stop.
The area is as green as I have ever seen it. My neighbors (who live up here full time) said that they measured over 200 inches of snow this winter! They claim that there was still 6 feet of snow in April. Note to self: stay in Texas during the winter!
Well - the sewing machine is calling my name... I have brought a number of projects with me to finish up before returning to the Hill Country.
